Jess’s dance story
In 2016 we started a project called “Tell Your Dance Story” to share just some of the transformations, achievements and accomplishments of our Rio Rhythmics members.
Is dance something you’ve always wanted to do?
Dance is always something that I’ve wanted to do but felt that I would be too shy, awkward and uncoordinated until one day I decided to put those feelings aside and give it a go. Now I wish I had discovered Latin dancing so much sooner. I never realised how much fun I was missing out on!
What made you take the first step?
I was bored of the gym and thought Samba would be a fun way to keep fit and learn something new. One of my friends was interested to try Samba too so it was something that we started together and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
How has dance impacted / changed your life?
Dancing has had a positive impact on my life, it has been rewarding through the mental and physical challenges that have been presented in a fun way. The joy it has created through the music, movement and the people has made it addictive. The people in the Rio Rhythmics community have always been supportive and have given me many happy memories, I’ve made so many new friends through my dancing journey and I look forward to sharing more experiences with them in the future.
What are your hopes/ dreams for the future?
In the future, I hope to travel to Brazil and learn more about Samba in particular, experience the culture and dance in the Carnaval parade of course!
I would love to be involved in more events and performances, and learn some other styles of dancing too.
Can you describe how you feel when you dance?
I feel complete happiness and freedom when I am dancing because I’m not thinking of anything other than that present moment. In those moments I’m enjoying the music and the connection with the people who are enjoying it with me.
