Samantha’s Dance Story

In 2016 we started a project called “Tell Your Dance Story” to share just some of the transformations, achievements and accomplishments of our Rio Rhythmics members.

What first brought you to the dance floor?

I have always wanted to learn Latin dance.

The right moment came along when a friend suggested we go dancing to Rio Rhythmics’ Saturday social night; Latin Mix. I was feeling rather nervous as I had never experienced dancing with a dance partner and I was unsure of what to expect. However, after taking part in the introduction lesson, I soon felt at ease as I was not the only beginner there. The student support people were friendly and encouraging. I loved the rhythm and groove of the music. I knew I wanted to learn more.

How did you feel after your first lesson, compared to how you feel now when you learn something new?

I felt very awkward and uncoordinated at first. I also had to learn to relax and not be the leader but I was determined to learn and improve. After 14 months, I feel more confident when learning new dance steps and find it easier to follow the lead.

Was dance ever part of your life before you started dancing at Rio Rhythmics?

Latin dance wasn’t a part of my life before, however I have always had a passion for dance as a young child.

Has dancing impacted or benefited your life in any way?

Absolutely! It helps me to forget about my stressful job – I call it my self-care! I’m more in tune with my body and I’m starting to feel more co-ordinated and confident. I feel like I’m a part of the Rio Rhythmics dance community and have met some incredible people and made wonderful friends.

What advice would you give to someone who is still tentative about taking a dance lesson?

Come along to Rio Rhythmics’ Saturday Latin Mix party and join in the introductory dance lesson. Everyone makes you feel so welcome. It’s a great way to give it a go! You could then take the next step and enrol in the Latin Dance Starter class.

How would you compare the feeling you get when you dance like this (dancing Samba in a parade) in public?

I find it amazingly energising and feel confident dancing with my Samba friends, to the live music, wearing the beautiful costumes. Incorporating all I have learnt in the dance classes. It gives me a buzz as it’s so much fun! I love to see people enjoying the music and our dance performance.
